Public Domain Registry: I Love You!

While this is a blog about domains and this post is about email SPAM, there is a connection that makes them relate. When we get email spam from domainers who are selling domain names, we warn them that it's unprofessional. rude, and could result in the loss of their hosting account and domain if the spam is reported. Domainers often get a break.
Non-domainers, and especially email marketers should know better and don't get a warning, they just get reported. While this may seem to be a waste of time, it's generally not. Well documented spam reports can be very effective in keeping you off spam lists and getting spammers shut down. We've been doing it for years and still have the first email address we started with back in 1999, despite it being published on web sites and given to many companies. We do get spam, but not so much that we can't deal with it. The reason is spam reporting.
Generally domain registrars don't get spam reports because no one expects them to do anything. When people report, they just report to the hosting provider or the sender's ISP. A few years ago I discovered that DomainSite.com would suspend domain names of customers who were reported. Since that time I keep sending the domain registrars reports along with the hosting providers.
Public Domain Registry has been the most responsive to these reports and actually let's me know when they can confirm the problem and have suspended the domain name used in the spam. This is great because it offers another way to shut down what a spammer is doing and costs them more money when they lose their domain name. And it has another pair of eyes watching them for future abuse.
Thank you, Public Domain Registry, for helping with a continual problem and offering a badly needed option for spam fighters everywhere!!! :-)
